Friday afternoon’s draw paired Atlético with Sergio Ramos’ Sevilla in the quarterfinal stage, the first meeting between the two teams outside of LaLiga since 2018. Sevilla eliminated Atleti from the Copa del Rey that year, advancing to the semifinals after a 5-2 aggregate win. This will be the first single-elimination cup tie between these sides since the 2010 Copa del Rey final, which Sevilla won 2-0.
When will the Copa del Rey quarterfinal be played?
Atlético will host this Copa del Rey quarterfinal at the Cívitas Metropolitano on Thursday, Jan. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. local time. Atleti will visit Granada in a league match on Monday before hosting Valencia on Sunday night, with this match sandwiched in between.
Sevilla have reached the last eight after eliminating Getafe at the Coliseum on Tuesday. The Andalusians pulled away in the second half thanks to two goals from young striker Isaac Romero and went on to win 3-1. Sevilla, coached by former Atlético boss Quique Sánchez Flores, are hoping to reach its second Copa del Rey semifinal in four years, while Atleti are aiming for its first cup semifinal in seven seasons.
This will be the second meeting of the season between Atlético and Sevilla, and the second of three meetings in six weeks. Atleti won the first matchup two days before Christmas, a rescheduled fixture that was originally slated for matchday four of LaLiga. Marcos Llorente scored immediately after halftime, and Los Colchoneros survived a Çaglar Söyüncü red card to secure the 1-0 victory.
César Azpilicueta will not be available for this tie, as the veteran defender suffered a lateral meniscus tear during extra time on Thursday. He is expected to miss two or three months while recovering from the injury.
