Villarreal CF 2-2 Atlético de Madrid: Player Ratings

Correa’s brace was not enough on the day as 10-man Atlético finished third.

Starting XI:

Grbić

Conceded in the opening 10 minutes from a Nicolas Jackson strike. Grbić rallied in the second half with a string of impressive saves and kept Atlético Madrid ahead as long as he physically able. Had to be replaced late in the match with what looked to be a lower Boyd injury. 7

Reguilón

Had a huge chance to extend Atlético’s lead to 3-1 but fluffed his lines. Isolated and beaten often by Sami Chukwueze in the second half. Expected to return to Tottenham this summer when his loan expires. 4

Hermoso

Made multiple important tackles but left Axel Wiesel out to dry on the sequence that saw the Belgian sent off. Much better on the ball than off it, switched the field often to change the point of attack and continue the movement forward. His pass from defense started the counter that led to Ángel Correa’s second goal. 5.5

Witsel

Lost Jackson on his first-half goal, giving him an open lane on net. The striker took advantage of the Belgian throughout the match with his quick movement off the ball. Witsel’s season ended with a 70th-minute red card after his last-man tackle on Giovani Lo Celso. 3

Savić

Back in the starting lineup, Savić made his presence felt with three clearances and some good passing sequences with Molina out wide. The 32-year-old looked his age several times this season and will be one to keep a close eye on in 2023/24. 5

Molina

Contributed on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Molina ended the night with four tackles and three interceptions. On the ball, the Argentine connected with his compatriot Ángel Correa on the flank, resulting in some promising crosses. His ability to draw fouls resulted in the free kick that opened up the scoring. 6

Saúl

His late arrivals into the box offered Atlético another option in the penalty area, but this left gaps in the midfield that Villarreal exploited. Saúl made Chukwueze’s life difficult at times, helping to trap him on the left flank. We’ll see if this was indeed his final Atleti appearance. 4.5

Koke

Won the ball back to start the counter on Correa’s second goal. Worked hard in midfield and dropped into defense regularly, especially after Atlético were reduced to ten men. 5

Barrios

His early misplaced header across goal cost Atleti dearly, resulting in Jackson’s ninth-minute opening goal. Showed moments of quality with his positioning and otherwise-classy passing. Picked up a bad yellow card in the second half. Plenty to build on for next season, whether he stays at the Metropolitano or moves elsewhere on loan. 4.5

Griezmann

The Frenchman added another two assists to his tally, ending the season with 16 assists in addition to 15 goals. On both occasions, he delivered well-placed passes to set up fellow World Cup winner Correa for both of the visitors’ goals. Absolutely brilliant campaign, from the first game to the last — his 31 goal contributions in LaLiga are a career high. 8

Correa

Scored a brace to end the season with nine goals and good feelings. His first goal came from an 18th-minute set piece, as the striker lost his man and had an open shot on goal from Antoine Griezmann’s low free kick. For his second goal, four minutes before the hour, Correa took a deft touch past Filip Jörgensen and passed the ball into an open goal. 8

Subs:

Morata

Replaced Reguilón with five minutes to go. Didn’t have much of an impact in his limited time. Probably fouled by Pau Torres in the buildup to Jorge Pascual’s 92nd-minute equalizer. N/A

Antonio Gomis

It was a baptism of fire for the academy goalkeeper, who was put into net after Ivo Grbic had to come off with injury and conceded the late goal to Pascual. 4

Lemar

Came on for Correa in the 85th minute and didn’t have much of an impact in his limited time. N/A
