Girona FC 0-1 Atlético de Madrid: Player Ratings

Atlético found a way at Montilivi as Morata scored a very late winner.

Oblak

Nearly dribbled himself into trouble in the latter stages of an uncharacteristically-nervous first half. Made a good save at his near post on Viktor Tsygankov early in the second half, kept out Arnau Martínez with another near-post stop, then made an incredible parried save on a David López lob from the halfway line. 7.5

Molina

Continues to grow defensively, teaming up well with Marcos Llorente to keep Rodrigo Riquelme quiet in the first half. But the winger was much better after halftime and Molina’s offensive contribution was basically zero. 5

Savić

Fine overall but had a few mishaps. Almost gave away a penalty for handball early on but the offside flag spared his blushes. Came close again later in the first half with a flying elbow on Taty Castellanos in the air. Booked in the 66th minute for cutting down Riquelme on the break. 6

Giménez

Passed crisply and hoofed clear any danger in the first half. Committed a horrible giveaway inside the final 10 minutes to start a sequence that ended with Riquelme drawing out Jan Oblak for a fine save. 6

Hermoso

Charged forward from the left when Atlético Madrid won the ball, looking to create overlaps with Yannick Carrasco. That duo doesn’t look to have much chemistry, though. Made an important block on a Riquelme effort in the 68th minute, one of a few significant interventions in the second half. 7

Carrasco

Had a good first half and a crack from long range saved well by Paulo Gazzaniga. A constant thorn for Tsygankov and Arnau, though he was guilty of a little over- dribbling. Carrasco also made four interceptions in a well-rounded display at left wing-back. 6.5

Koke

Atlético’s central midfield hub with 63 first-half touches. Kept the ball moving at every opportunity but faded in influence after halftime. 5.5

Llorente

Found little space to operate down the right during the first half but delivered one slicing through ball to Antoine Griezmann that led to a Memphis chance. Gazzaniga got down to stop his volleyed right-footed effort early in the second half. Booked for arguing just before the hour. 4

Lemar

Passed at a 94 percent clip and no one could get the ball off him. But his physical level remains low, and that makes it difficult to see how he sustains this recent uptick in prominence. 5.5

Griezmann

Drove a low shot into Gazzaniga for Atlético’s first real go midway through the first half. Participated in lots of quick combination play on the right in the first half but dropped back a line in the second half, coming forward to blaze a shot into side netting on 78 minutes. Took the corner that Álvaro Morata turned in during stoppage time, a whipped delivery that stayed low. 7

Memphis

Had a fantastic chance to open the scoring on 23 minutes, when he found space eight yards out but sent a Griezmann cross into orbit. Later took up a Llorente cross, put David López on the floor, and blazed over the bar from close range again. 4

Morata

Entered for Memphis in the 61st minute. Struggled to stay onside after coming on but ended up as the hero. Grabbed his 10th goal of the season with a tap-in at the back post from Griezmann’s 91st-minute corner, the ball taking a nick off Ángel Correa and Girona’s Cristhian Stuani. 7

Correa

Entered for Lemar in the 61st minute. Hardly involved until the 90th minute, when he should have won the match with a shot that fell wide from inside the six-yard box. Morata scored from the ensuing set piece, and Correa got a touch on the ball to flick it into his path. 6

De Paul

Entered for Llorente in the 61st minute, his first minutes since Feb. 19. A much more combative midfield presence than Thomas Lemar, and more willing to take chances with his long passes. Competition in midfield really looks to be heating up again. 5

Saúl

Entered for Carrasco in the 76th minute. Griezmann spotted him making a run into the box moments after his entry and stuck a cross on his head, but Saúl couldn’t guide it toward Gazzaniga. Brought on to tuck in from the left to gum up the middle of the pitch, especially after Atlético went ahead late. N/A

Witsel

Entered for Koke in the 81st minute. Added positional nous and a bit of freshness as Atleti attempted to clog the middle late on. N/A
