Atlético Madrid 2-1 Almería: Player Ratings

Atlético’s strong first half was enough to see off a determined Almería.

Had multiple important saves in a second half that saw Diego Simeone’s men pressed back into a defensive posture. Conceded in the 62nd minute to an unmarked Léo Baptistão, but he had just made an excellent diving save on Álex Pozo before the rebound found its way in. 6.5

Was dangerous throughout the afternoon, constantly looking for opportunities forward with the ball and runs in behind. Llorente found space pretty consistently despite the efforts of Almería’s left-sided Sergio Akieme-Edgar González duo. He assisted Ángel Correa’s 22nd-minute goal with a trademark low cross. 7.5

Played very wide and high up the pitch, but he looked too disconnected from his teammates. 5

Was far more composed compared to his last performance against FC Barcelona, making well-timed tackles and clearing the ball whenever the opportunity arose. 5.5

Slotted into the middle of Atlético Madrid’s defense, the Belgian was caught out for lack of pace a couple times but continues to pass the ball precisely (96 percent accuracy) and looks comfortable as the team’s de facto sweeper (seven clearances). 5.5

His first appearance in over a month, left his teammates vulnerable with sloppy touches of the ball in the second half. Simeone has better options at his disposal now. 4

De Paul

The midfielder logged a full day of running, but he’s not making many decisive contributions for Atlético. His attempts to send passes into space were frequently intercepted. 4.5

Made simple, effective passes to keep possession. Overwhelmed in the second half, unable to be in three places at once as Almería raised the ante in search of an equalizer. 5

LaLiga’s reigning player of the month had a hand in both Atlético goals, grabbing the primary assist Álvaro Morata and the hockey assist for Correa five minutes later. He was more subdued in the second half and could really use a rest soon. 7

Scored the first goal of the night in stunning fashion. Morata danced past César Montes with a quick change of direction and rolled the ball past an outreached Luís Maximiano for his first league goal in a month. 7

Found and exploited open space throughout the game. He connected well with the ever-present Llorente, most notably when he scored the team’s second goal after making a darting run into the box and tapping in the Spaniard’s cross. 7

Came on as Atlético were attracting considerable pressure from Almería. The striker had promising moments trying to connect with Rodrigo Riquelme, but the touch and precision let him down. 4.5

Added some much-needed energy in midfield and won six of his seven duels. 5.5

Replaced international teammate Correa and looked more energetic with a point to prove. Made three passes into the final third in only 15 minutes. 5

Played 15 minutes and picked up two tackles. 5

Subbed on for Samuel Lino. Couldn’t do much in his limited time. N/A
