Atlético Madrid on Saturday found out its Copa del Rey round of 16 opponent: bogey team Levante.
Los Colchoneros will visit the Ciutat de València later this month with a quarterfinal berth on the line. Atlético have not qualified for the Copa del Rey’s last eight since 2018, and to get there, Diego Simeone’s men will have to eliminate a team they have beaten only once in their past five tries.
Under Javi Calleja’s management, Levante have overcome a slow start to the season in LaLiga Smartbank and appear well-positioned to return to the top flight in 2023/24. Levante are second in Segunda and the Valencian side have only been beaten three times all season. A 91st-minute goal from Wesley Moraes on Tuesday capped Levante’s 3-2 win over Getafe and sealed Las Granotas’ place in the last 16, and they are attempting to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019.
Atlético and Levante have met once before in the Copa del Rey, with Atleti emerging victorious following a round of 32 penalty shootout victory in the 2006/07 edition of the competition.
