Real Madrid 3-1 Atlético de Madrid aet: Player Ratings

Atlético’s Copa del Rey dream is over.

Jan Oblak

Wasn’t troubled until the second half. He came up big with a save from Karim Benzema as he clawed it away early in the period. Could have done a bit better on Rodrygo’s 78th-minute equalizer at the near post but was left on an island for Benzema’s 103rd-minute winner. Vinícius Jr. beat him with a solo effort at the end for good measure. 5

Nahuel Molina

Played well before Ferland Mendy went off with Vinícius offering little defensive cover. Really exploited that area when Eduardo Camavinga had to play at left-back after Mendy’s injury. Lovely run and first-time pass for the opener. 7

Stefan Savić

Sent off in the 99th minute, picking up a second yellow card for cutting down Camavinga on the left. But despite the red card (Atlético’s fourth in the past seven games), the Montenegrin was excellent positionally, cutting out a number of through balls and standing tall against Vinícius. 6

Mario Hermoso

Hermoso’s unlikely resurgence continues. Not spectacular by any means but no costly errors. Booked for a “tactical” foul on Vinícius in the second half as Madrid were building momentum. Might have done better for Rodrygo’s dribble and goal but he was thinking about the yellow from before and didn’t put his foot in. 7

Reinildo

Made multiple outstanding tackles in his own area but all overshadowed by Vinícius passing the ball through his legs and into the goal to seal the result. 7

Koke

A throwback performance from Koke. He held the middle like a true veteran and initiated Atlético Madrid’s press with Rodrigo de Paul slotting in when he was out of position. Some very neat passes too — his perfect ball over the top to Molina keyed the opening goal. 8

Rodrigo de Paul

Almost perfect first half. He completed more passes than any other Atlético player in the opening 45 but spoiled it with a late yellow and then a constant back-and-forth with the referee before turning his attention to Dani Ceballos. 6.5

Thomas Lemar

Complemented De Paul and Koke well in midfield. Covered well in defense too. 6

Antoine Griezmann

Player his customary role in the middle, knitting things together and progressing play into the most dangerous areas of the field. Kept his cool even when Atlético were truly suffering. Stung Thibaut Courtois’ palms with an excellent free-kick before heading off at the start of extra time. 6.5

Angel Correa

Tormented Real Madrid in the first half. Found it harder to get on the ball and make an impact in the second half. Provided good cover defensively for Molina even if it’s not natural to him. 6

Álvaro Morata

We were treated to the full Álvaro Morata Experience tonight. When he wasn’t falling over himself and diving, he played some nice football and timed his run well to finish from Molina’s pass. Replaced by Witsel after working hard for just over an hour. Got himself an important goal. 8

Substitutes

Axel Witsel

Replaced Morata after an hour as Simeone tried to batten down the hatches. Left in the dust by Rodrygo on the Brazilian’s brilliant equalizer. Moved to center-back after Savić’s dismissal and missed the ball on Marco Asensio’s assist for Benzema.

Memphis Depay

Came on for Thomas Lemar with around 15 minutes to play as Atlético had seemed to weather the storm and were starting to counter Real Madrid. Looked like Atlético’s only real threat after coming on, with all the play ushered toward him. The Dutchman came closest after escaping his mark and nearly bundling the ball past Courtois from a corner. 5.5

Yannick Carrasco

Came on for Ángel Correa and was unable to exploit Real Madrid’s serious full-back problem. Doesn’t have the zip and electricity that usually makes him so dangerous. Feels like his Atlético career is petering out. 4

Saúl Ñiguez

Replaced Koke and pushed further forward as a winger of sorts, particularly after the Savić red card. Sturdy defensively but still unable to contribute anything in the final third. 4.5

Geoffrey Kondogbia

Replaced de Paul and produced an out-of-control performance. Wasteful with the ball and all over the place defensively.

Pablo Barrios

Replaced Griezmann at the start of extra time. Dropped deep to receive the ball and progress it into touch. Seemed to hold up well in a tough atmosphere. His development will be the top story for the rest of Atlético’s season. 5
