Starting XI:

Oblak

Valladolid were unable to muster many chances, so it was another comfortable match for the Atlético Madrid keeper. He parried the ball away from Óscar Plano’s shot in the 71st minute for his sole save. Oblak could have done better distribution-wise, as he seemed rushed to release the ball as soon as it reached his feet. 5

Reinildo

Subdued by a lively Luis Pérez early on but the birthday boy soon simplified his game and gathered his bearings, exchanging passes with the fiery Antoine Griezmann on the left side of the pitch. His work defensively plugged up holes and won back possession. 6

Hermoso

The man never fails to entertain. Scored Atlético’s third goal in the 28th minute, flicking his own rebound into the net past Jordi Masip. At the back, he made thumping clearances and looked relatively comfortable in a four-man back line. 7

Witsel

Beaten for pace by Sergio León in the opening minutes. Was able to weather Valladolid’s initial attacks and spent most of the match clearing the ball and circulating the ball. 5.5

Molina

The World Cup winner is growing and getting more comfortable at the Metropolitano, He assisted Griezmann’s 23rd-minute goal with a short penalty area cross to the Frenchman. 6.5

Griezmann

A masterclass from the Frenchman. In the span of 10 minutes in the first half, he assisted Álvaro Morata’s goal and scored one of his own (his first at the Metropolitano since returning from FC Barcelona) before he set up Mario Hermoso with a deft free kick. Griezmann ran the offensive show with a flair only matched by his hot-pink hair. 9

Lemar

Looked to turn and drive forward, often picking up the ball from deep within the defensive third. Connected well with Griezmann and out wide with Marcos Llorente before being subbed out for Geoffrey Kondogbia in the second half. 5

Koke

Played a more-defensive role as the #5. Koke could be seen dropping back as the first line of defense when Valladolid attempted counters. Offensively, the captain nabbed a hockey assist on Morata’s goal and hit a shot in the second half that hit the woodwork and glided just wide. 6

Llorente

Took full advantage of his offensive freedom. Frequently looked to thread the needle with through balls between the gaps in Valladolid’s backline and he found success doing so. Subbed off five minutes before the hour with discomfort. 7

Morata

Missed two big chances early but put away his opportunity in the 18th minute, taking up Griezmann’s flick, cutting onto his right foot and beating Jordi Masip at the near post to open the floodgates. 7

Correa

Put in a big effort over the 90 minutes but missed a little luck. He hit both posts with a shot in the second half with Atlético pushing for a fourth goal. 6.5

Subs:

De Paul

Replaced Llorente, who picked up a second-half knock. Added fresh legs and a battling If not defensive presence in midfield. 5

Carrasco

Unable to produce his usual magic one-on-one but his burgeoning connection with new signing Memphis shows promise. 5

Kondogbia

Kept possession, used his physical prowess to win the ball back in the midfield. 5.5

Depay

The attacker looked eager to make his mark on his debut, even though he played just 15 minutes. His touch let him down a couple times but his vision and mobility are big pluses. 5

Saúl

Replaced Koke and helped end the match with a clean sheet. 5
