The 49-year-old Argentine had been working with Movistar as a commentator before joining up with Atlético Madrid in advance of the 2022/23 preseason.
López and Simeone played for Argentine together on a number of occasions. Simeone represented Argentina for 24 years from 1988 until 2002, while López wore the Albiceleste jersey 32 times during his career.

Nelson Vivas will remain as Simeone’s assistant manager for the upcoming campaign, with Hernán Bonvicini also retained as a key assistant. Óscar “El Profe” Ortega is expected to stay on and take care of the team’s physical preparation despite recent reports linking him with a job on Diego Alonso’s Uruguay staff. Pablo Vercellone will also remain in his longstanding role as the goalkeeping coach, working with Jan Oblak and whoever will deputize for the Slovenian next season.
