Rayo Vallecano 0-1 Atlético Madrid: Player Ratings

Koke’s curler was enough to earn three points.

Starting XI:

Oblak

Had a relatively-comfortable first half in net, with Rayo Vallecano having trouble penetrating the back line and get a clear opportunity to score. The keeper still made sure to be active claiming crosses and communicated well when defending set pieces. His save in the 60th minute kept Atlético Madrid in front. —6

Lodi

Picked up a yellow early on in the match. Seemed to lack the zip and urgency that have defined his recent good run of form. On the other side of the ball, his help defending with Reinildo halted many of Rayo’s attacks. —5

Reinildo

Worked in a calm, effective manner to make well-timed tackles and release the ball out of defense. Many of Rayo Vallecano’s attackers felt Reinildo’s presence as he continued to stay locked-in on his defensive duties through the full 90 minutes. Another strong outing from the new signing. —6.5

Savić

Paired nicely with José Giménez and stayed very compact with his fellow center-back. On the ball, the Montenegrin opted for the simple pass to release players like Marcos Llorente. —6

Giménez

The 27-year-old cleared the ball forcefully when necessary and distributed out the back nicely. His strong tackles on the ball helped to win back possession for the team. —6

Llorente

Similar to Lodi, the Spaniard didn't dominate the flank with runs up the field, but his defensive contributions on the right side made up for this. —5.5

De Paul

Especially in the first half, De Paul lofted multiple passes over the top to pick out the likes of Antoine Griezmann and João Félix. His set piece deliveries were just as valuable, creating scoring opportunities for his team on more than one occasion. —6

Herrera

Tracked back and pressed Rayo’s midfield with purpose. Herrera was not particularly creative in the final third, but his simple passing and movement off the ball was strong. He ended his hour on the pitch with 83 percent passing accuracy. —5.5

Koke

The captain might be entering a run of form, and he thrived in a more-physical match like this one against Rayo. Had a dot of a pass over the top to Griezmann early on in the match that set up a chance on net, and in the 49th minute, the captain connected with João Félix in a quick one-two to give the visitors the lead. His curling effort was his first goal all season. —7

Griezmann

Had chances early to score, but just failed to convert. Still, his movement off the ball continues to create opportunities for the team, and his defensive work is significant. —6

João Félix

Aggressive early on, looking to make things happen with his dribbling (he completed four of those). He set up Griezmann nicely in the first half with a good flick to the striker for a header. On the goal, the Portuguese held up the play and pinged the ball perfectly onto a running Koke’s right foot. —7

Subs:

Kondogbia

Replaced Lodi. Was physical in the middle, and on the ball looked for open pockets to receive, turn, and progress the play with his passes. —5.5

Correa

Came on for Herrera in the 64th minute. Couldn't make much of an impact with his time up top. Received a strange red card in the 85th minute, cutting his night short. —3.5

Suárez

Replaced João Félix. Similar to Correa, the Uruguayan didn't have many chances to open up a counter attack and score with his time on the field. He fluffed his lines when alone in the penalty area at the very end of the game. —5

Felipe

Came on for Griezmann in the 90th minute and couldn't have much of an impact with such limited time. —N/A

Hermoso

Similar to Felipe, Hermoso couldn't make much of an impact with his limited time after entering for Koke. —N/A
