This quarterfinal tie will comprise the first-ever meetings between reigning English champions City and reigning Spanish champions Atlético. Diego Simeone’s side just dispatched Manchester United from the competition with a 2-1 aggregate victory, while Guardiola’s men pasted Sporting Clube de Portugal 5-0 over two legs.
Simeone bested Guardiola in the 2015/16 Champions League, as a well-drilled Atlético side needed a second-leg away goal to overcome Pep’s Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena. The 2-2 aggregate scoreline (after a first-leg home win at the old Vicente Calderón) was enough to send Atleti to that season’s final at San Siro.

Man City currently lead the Premier League by a single point over Liverpool, while Atlético’s recent run of solid form has seen the Rojiblancos move back into LaLiga’s top four.
City will host the first leg at its Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, April 5. Atleti get the return leg at the Wanda Metropolitano the following Wednesday, April 13. The winner of this tie will move on to face the winner of the Chelsea-Real Madrid quarterfinal — setting up a potential rematch of the 2021 Champions League final a round earlier or a Madrid Derby semifinal.
