Atlético Madrid’s new signing, Daniel Wass, will miss at least a month due to a knee injury.
The right-back suffered the injury late in the second half against FC Barcelona on Sunday, when Ferrán Torres fell on him awkwardly as they fought for the ball.
The official statement that Atlético released says Wass has a “grade II sprain to his right knee,” but it does not say how long he will be out for. Diario AS reported he will be back after the next international break, which rules him out for a month.
Most outlets seem to agree the Dane will miss at least four weeks, if not more. This timeline means Wass will miss games against Getafe, Levante, Osasuna, Manchester United, Celta Vigo and Real Betis.
Wass has hardly played in 2022 after contracting coronavirus while at Valencia. Jose Bordalás was reluctant to sell the player, but Wass insisted he wanted to join Simeone’s side as Kieran Trippier’s replacement. Marcos Llorente has been deployed there in the past but he is also out injured.
The loss to Barcelona on Sunday leaves Atlético in fifth. With a seemingly-resurgent Barcelona and an in-form Villarreal pushing for the final spot in the Champions League along with Real Betis, Wass’s absence could have a big impact on Atlético’s push for Europe.
