Atlético Madrid 1-1 Manchester United: Player Ratings

An early João Félix goal was not enough for Atlético in a draw against United.

Starting XI:

Oblak

Besides some strong interventions on crosses, the Slovenian had a quiet night between the sticks. His outstretched foot was not enough to stop Anthony Elanga late in the second half as the keeper was left in a one-on-one situation. Denied Jesse Lingard in the final moments to keep the game level. —5.5

Lodi

Took advantage of the space Manchester United gave him on the left side. Took on defenders with confidence and skill. The Brazilian sent the ball into the box dangerously and assisted João Félix’s seventh-minute goal. —7.5

Reinildo

Made more than one vital tackle to stop United’s ball progression up the flank. Kept his passing simple and when he did get into the final third, the defender looked to send in a cross. But on United’s 80th-minute goal, his mistimed tackle left Elanga alone against Jan Oblak. —6

Giménez

Paired well with Savić well at the back. Besides picking up a yellow for arguing, the defender had a calm game, clearing the ball when needed and distributing either out wide or resolutely up the field. —6

Savić

Put on a show defensively. Made well-timed tackles and looked strong in the aerial game. Took command of the backline with his no-nonsense clearances and accurate passing. —7

Vrsaljko

Looked to push up the field and connect with players like Llorente and Correa, but his passing was erratic. His deflected header hit the woodwork in first half stoppage time, a key moment in the game. —5.5

Herrera

Played with physicality and attitude, and played on a yellow card most of the game. He attempted a team-high 51 passes and showed good chemistry with Geoffrey Kondogbia. —5

Kondogbia

Dominated the middle of the pitch. The Atlético Madrid pivot never faltered in his pressing, which helped win back possession to start attacks the other way. His pestering was vital, and United could not play through him in the first half. —7.5

Llorente

Used his pace and off-ball movement to open up space on the right flank. He tracked back to pressure the ball and nearly set up an Antoine Griezmann winner. Llorente ended the match with two key passes and two tackles. —5.5

João Félix

The Portuguese attacker glided past Maguire for a free header past David De Gea to open the scoring. After his goal, Félix was relatively quiet and was subbed off for Griezmann in the 76th minute. —7

Correa

Had moments of magic, including a silky turn on the ball to open up a shooting opportunity, but was largely ineffective against the English team’s backline. —4.5

Subs:

Lemar

Came on for Lodi with just over 15 minutes left in the match. The Frenchman didn’t have much of an impact on the game. —5

Griezmann

Subbed on for João Félix up top. Hit the bar in his attempt to win the match with five minutes to go. —5
