Starting XI:

Jan Oblak

Not much work for the keeper in the first half, as Espanyol only recorded one shot on target. Conceded in the second from a 62nd-minute Sergi Darder volley. —4

Reinildo

Did well towards the end of the first half, with movement up the field and teasing crosses into dangerous areas. Off the ball, Reinildo and Carrasco had a good understanding in their hour-plus together. – 7

Jose Giménez

Made his presence felt in the air, as his aggression helped Atlético Madrid get on top early and keep possession after Leandro Cabrera’s 28th-minute red card. Picked up a late yellow in the match, ruling him out for the midweek game against Mallorca. Nearly scored the winner in extra time but sent the ball wide from close range. — 5

Stefan Savić

The center-back’s passing was short and effective (94 percent). Led his team with three interceptions as well. — 6

Nahuel Molina

Took advantage of the space that Espanyol’s deep defensive block gave him, charging forward and finding space to send in a cross or crash into the box (three shot attempts). Was beaten by Joselu in the air to set up Darder for Espanyol’s goal. — 4

Yannick Carrasco

Connected well with Reinildo, dynamic in his attacking play. Caused problems for Espanyol’s backline, creating six chances but failing to register a shot on target of his own. — 7

Geoffrey Kondogbia

Beaten far too easily by Darder on his second half strike, failing to track the attacker in the box and giving him a clear strike on goal. — 3

Rodrigo de Paul

Distributed the ball well from the middle of the pitch (86 percent accuracy). His passing out wide opened lanes for Llorente and Carrasco. Defensively, the Argentine worked hard to recover the ball, but he was hooked at halftime with the team already a man up. — 6

Marcos Llorente

Back from injury after eight games out, the Spaniard’s attacking power added more drives into the box and another element to Atlético’s attack. In the second half, the wide midfielder started to cut inside more frequently, however his efforts were not enough to produce a goal. — 7

Antoine Griezmann

Continues to be a vital part in the attack. Had two of Atleti’s seven shots on target and is in excellent form. — 7

Álvaro Morata

Drew fouls with cleverness and hard work, getting Cabrera sent off in the 28th minute after the defender smothered him in open space. Offensively underwhelming and hooked after Atlético went behind. — 6

Subs:

Ángel Correa

Tasked to generate chances against Diego Martínez’s low block, but touch let him down a number of times. — 4.5

Axel Witsel

Replacing Kondogbia, he passed well in his time on the pitch. — 5

João Félix

Transfer rumors continue to swirl around João, who showed another taste of his quality following his 65th-minute entry. On 79 minutes, the Portuguese international darted into open space and received a Thomas Lemar ball over top. After taking a quick touch to control the ball, he hit a laser at Benjamin Lecomte’s near post to secure a point for the home team. But he picked up a late yellow for a tackle on Darder, suspending him for the match against Mallorca. – 7.5

Thomas Lemar

Floated the ball over Espanyol’s backline, setting up João Félix for his goal. Showed the team missed him in his absence. —7

Matheus Cunha

Didn’t have much of an impact after coming on for Morata late in the second half. — 5
