For the first time since 1999, Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad will meet in the Copa del Rey.
La Real were drawn as the home team, so the game will be held at Reale Arena on Jan. 19 or 20.
The draw, held Friday morning, saw 13 teams out of the final 16 hail from the top flight. Tournament surprises Atlético Baleares have been paired with Valencia, and a Seville derby is on the cards in addition to a rematch of the 2021 final between Athletic Club and FC Barcelona.
Imanol Alguacil’s Real Sociedad won the 2020 Copa del Rey (albeit a year late) and held off a furious Leganés rally to qualify for the last 16, while Atlético eased past Rayo Majadahonda at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday. These two teams have met once already this season in LaLiga, where Atlético summoned a second half rally to draw 2-2 with the then-leaders.
