Atlético Madrid’s lack of a clear plan to replace Kieran Trippier grows more obvious with each day.
According to multiple Spanish media reports Wednesday, Valencia coach José Bordalás has told his club that he is counting on Daniel Wass and will not allow the Denmark international to leave for Atlético this month.
Wass agreed to terms on a contract with Atleti over the weekend and a move seemed imminent, but the operation has slowed in recent days. Valencia are refusing to let the player go without a replacement signed.
Barring another significant change, Wass will remain at Mestalla for the rest of the season and leave as a free agent when his contract expires in June.
Despite being linked with several players since Trippier’s departure for Newcastle, Atlético remain short at right-back, with Marcos Llorente to receive most of the starts at the position until a replacement is acquired. There are still over two weeks left in the January window, but Atleti are scrambling and do not appear capable of signing anyone right now to fill the void.
