Atlético Madrid visit Osasuna on Wednesday night — and thanks to other results, Diego Simeone’s team can jump into the top four with a victory in Pamplona.
Victory is far from given, however. Atlético have just three wins away from home during this league season, while Jagoba Arrasate’s side has picked up points from 10 of 14 at El Sadar this term, one season after ringing up a lengthy unbeaten run at the stadium.
Osasuna’s 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad on Sunday took some sting out of Atleti’s draw at Athletic Club, and the mattress makers are still just a point behind fourth-place La Real. Simeone will welcome back João Félix from suspension but will remain without Felipe Monteiro. The club confirmed Tuesday that the center back has suffered a quadriceps strain and has been put on an individualized training regimen. His return is unknown.
Atleti won the reverse fixture back in December.
Possible XI Oblak; Trippier, Savić, Hermoso, Lodi; Thomas, Saúl, Correa, Koke; Llorente, Costa.
Prediction 2-1 Atlético. One of these days, I’ll predict Atlético will win away from home and the club will actually do it. Just waiting for that day to come.
Despite a poor all-time record at the place, Atleti have won four of the past five meetings at El Sadar since the 2010s began. This is a good chance for Diego Costa — who loves a goal against this club — to generate momentum for the first time in...a long time. I don’t expect Félix to jump right back into the XI, but his entry alone should prove more effective than any of Simeone’s five Sunday substitutions.
Osasuna have cobbled together results by committee since Chimy Ávila’s knee injury. Jan Oblak could suffer a bit as Felipe’s situation grows more precarious, but there’s really no excuse for Los Colchoneros — they have to win this one behind closed doors. If they can, they will close to within two points of Sevilla — who drew 1-1 at Levante on Monday.
