Reports have claimed that Germán “Mono” Burgos decided during the season that he would go out on his own next year after years by Diego Simeone’s side. The latest club to which the former goalkeeper has been linked is Argentine giants River Plate.

Nelson Vivas, the former Quilmes, Boca Juniors, Inter Milan and Arsenal player, will step in as Cholo’s assistant. Vivas has been involved with Atlético Madrid’s technical staff for the last two years when Mono started to consider his future. Vivas has a long history with Simeone, having worked with him between 2006 until 2010.

Marcelo Gallardo is doing a good job with the Argentine side, but according to the report on ESPN, Burgos is attracting attention from several clubs in Latin America.

Burgos worked with Simeone previously at River Plate and Catania.

Atlético will welcome Gabi back to the club to join up with Simeone so that he may learn the ropes as one of his coaches next season. Simeone’s staff reshuffle will come at a time of uncertainty for everyone. Without knowing for certain when the season will actually start and with the possibility of a shortened pre-season, it will mean Gabi and Vivas will have to hit the ground running over the summer.
