Diego Simeone’s men aim to keep the buenas sensaciones going on Wednesday night in a rematch with Lokomotiv Moscow.

Atlético Madrid solidified its status as an early contender for the 2020/21 LaLiga Santander crown with a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Saturday. However, Atlético have yet to really arrive in this season’s Champions League. Halfway through the group stage, Atleti have:

  • been pasted at Bayern Munich.
  • needed late fireworks to score a comeback win over Red Bull Salzburg.
  • been held to a draw in Russia, stonewalled by Lokomotiv goalkeeper Guilherme.

So, this latest meeting with the Muscovites is an important one. Combined with a second Bayern win over Salzburg, an Atlético victory Wednesday night could virtually wrap up knockout stage qualification. Atleti have won 27 of 35 Champions League home games under Simeone and have won nine of the past 10 at the Wanda Metropolitano. That includes a 2-0 triumph over Lokomotiv last December.

But any other result would make the situation more complicated — particularly as Bayern come to the Spanish capital on Dec. 1. Atlético won’t have Luis Suárez or Lucas Torreira for this match as both players continue their isolation periods, and it is still unknown when the Uruguay stars will return. Combined with Héctor Herrera’s injury and Geoffrey Kondogbia’s ineligibility, this limits Simeone’s rotation options somewhat following the Barcelona game and ahead of a trip to Valencia next weekend.

Lokomotiv snapped a six-game winless run on Saturday. As he did against Atlético in matchday three, Anton Miranchuk scored a penalty as Lokomotiv beat Arsenal Tula 1-0.

Should be a good one!
