Atlético Madrid will play Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow in the 2019/20 Champions League group stage. Atlético hope their final destination this season will be Istanbul, and the May 30 final at Atatürk Olympic Stadium. The first step to getting there will be navigating through a group that does look a little tricky.
The Rojiblancos will face Juve twice again this season after drawing them from Pot 1 (and beating them in preseason). Their record against the Italians is two wins, one loss and one draw. Of course, it was this very team that rallied from a 2-0 deficit to eliminate Atlético in last season’s Round of 16.
German side Bayer Leverkusen are another old friend who Simeone and co. last saw in spring 2017, also in the Round of 16. They have played the German side six times (four times in the Champions League, twice in Europa League) and have a record of two wins, three draws and one loss.
The final team in the group is Lokomotiv Moscow. Atlético thrashed the Russian side 8-1 across two legs on their way to the Europa League final in 2018 and will play their fourth and fifth games against them. The previous encounters saw the mattress makers win twice and draw once.
