It is official — Jan Oblak has signed a new contract with Atlético Madrid that will keep him with the team until 2023.

The news offers a sense of relief for the fans and the club as a whole. For the past year or so, rumors about Oblak departing have been nonstop. PSG and most recently Manchester United are among those who have reportedly monitored his situation.

The 26-year-old has been at Atlético since he moved from Benfica for what now seems like an absolute bargain of €16 million. With his new contract, his release clause has been boosted to a whopping €120 million — a world record for a goalkeeper.

Oblak’s impact on Atlético has grown tremendously the past two to three seasons. In his 203 matches overall, he has kept 115 clean sheets. He makes things look so easy in goal and is not only one of the most decisive players in his team, but also in his league and arguably in the world.

“I’m happy to have renewed my contract,” Oblak said in a video that you can watch below. “A lot has been said about this subject and we have reached an agreement in the end.”
