Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Lucas Hernández from Atlético Madrid for €80 million on a five year deal.

The French World Cup winning defender will leave Atlético after over a decade with the club, starting in the academy as a 10-year-old.

The 23-year-old started out at Rayo Majadahonda before moving to Atlético’s youth system and working his way up.

Speculation had been rife that the deal would be completed but Bayern reportedly wanted a discount on his €80 million release clause. The Spanish side were unwilling to move on his price, however, and he becomes the first of what is expected to be several signings in the summer.

Atlético could also lose Diego Godín to Inter Milan, who have said they are hoping to make the signing official soon, in the summer as Diego Simeone’s team undergoes a significant change of personnel.

Lucas played 110 times in total for Atlético so far with 10 more games to go in the season. He will now, however, play another game for Atletico Madrid as the Bayern doctor explains: “In our medical examination, we have found damage to the inner ligament of the right knee, which must be repaired surgically.”

His brother, Theo, also played for the rojiblancos but left for Real Madrid two summers ago and has since left on loan to Real Sociedad.
