Atlético Madrid’s Copa del Rey adventure continues on Wednesday night as Diego Simeone’s men travel to Catalonia for another showdown with Girona.

The hosts have been a thorn in Atlético’s side since their promotion in 2017 and Simeone has never masterminded a win over them — just three draws, the latest of which took place on Dec. 2. But these two clubs have never squared off in a cup competition, and Atleti are on a run of six consecutive Copa quarterfinal appearances. And although they will have had less rest than Girona, the mattress makers can take a big step toward a seventh straight quarterfinal with a positive result.

Simeone looks set to utilize another new starting XI following Sunday’s unconventional side at Sevilla, beginning with Juanfran at left back as Santiago Arias will reenter the team. Saúl, then, will move back into central midfield, and the coach reportedly is debating whether or not to incorporate Koke and Ángel Correa into his eleven. Cup keeper Antonio Adán also will make his first appearance of 2019 in this fixture.

Possible XI

Adán; Arias, Godín, Giménez, Juanfran; Rodri, Saúl, Thomas P, Lemar; Griezmann, Kalinić.

Predicted scoreline

Girona 1-1 Atlético.
