Antoine Griezmann decides to stay with Atlético

The moment we’ve all been waiting for: Griezmann announces he will continue on in the capital.

“La Decisión” has been taken: Antoine Griezmann confirmed in a 30-minute documentary film that he will spurn Barcelona’s advances and remain at Atlético Madrid.

The film, aired Thursday night on Movistar+ and produced by Gerard Piqué’s Kosmos Studios, took viewers through the past several months of Griezmann’s life as he got a new tattoo, rode his horses, shot some hoops and played a little football — all while striking a pensive look when it came time to think about his future. According to the documentary, Griezmann made his final decision at home in Madrid on June 3, a day before he flew to Russia with his France teammates.

The rather-enlightening half an hour showed a 27-year-old legitimately torn over his next move, albeit with a few teasers about his final decision thrown in — he wore a red-and-white checkered shirt and kicked around an Atlético ball in his house, for example. But even though he was whistled in the season finale against Eibar, the May 16 Europa League triumph combined with encouragement from Diego Godín and Diego Simeone convinced the Frenchman to stay in Madrid.

Griezmann is expected now to sign a new long-term contract that will make him one of Europe’s highest-paid players. He will remain at the forefront of Simeone’s project, one that has seen the club reach an agreement to sign Griezmann’s France teammate Thomas Lemar and confirm a renewal for José Giménez in the past three days.

We will have much more regarding Griezmann’s decision in the coming hours.
