Real Sociedad 3-0 Atlético Madrid: Post-match comments

Simeone and co. reflected on a heavy defeat.

Real Sociedad throttled Atlético Madrid 3-0 at Anoeta on Thursday evening, an unexpected result that could hand LaLiga to Barcelona as soon as this Sunday. Willian José and Juanmi sentenced Atlético to the lopsided loss, and los colchoneros never really looked like scoring or reacting in any meaningful way to the txuri-urdin’s strong showing.

After the demolition, Simeone, Thomas Partey and Stefan Savić tried to explain what went so wrong.

Diego Simeone

On a great performance by the hosts:

“La Real played a very good game, very concrete. They beat us deservedly.”

On his side’s recent struggles away from home:

“It’s true that we’ve gone through a bad streak as the visitors. We simply have to observe, be attentive and be careful because the opponents [have] hurt us a lot when we play away from home.”

On an offside decision that may have denied Kévin Gameiro a first half goal:

“Gameiro was in the right position, but the linesman didn’t see it that way. Up in the stands people could see he was onside.”

Thomas Partey

On the loss:

“We have to apologize to the fans. We must forget about this match and think about the next.”

On the fight for top four positioning:

“We want to win all the matches that remain and see what happens. We have a philosophy that takes us game-by-game.”

Stefan Savić

On the loss and the road ahead:

“They played a good first half and scored a goal. We wanted to equalize but they were in a good position. They took their chances, and now we have to take care of second place, since it’s up for grabs.”
