- Gabi hits 400 appearances
Hey Atléticos, it’s time for another Weekly Rojiblanco. It’s always nice to be writing one of these right after a win, especially one that reminds us that the season remains very much alive. Despite the disappointing loss to Barcelona on Sunday, Atlético Madrid are still in the hunt for some silverware this year. However, there was one bright spot to come from that aforementioned loss—the match saw Gabi make his 400th appearance for the club.
In honor of that somewhat staggering accomplishment, the club released the following video, which also features the all-time appearances leader Adelardo Rodriguez (553).
Gabi sits seventh all time on the appearances list, and it is not out of the question that he could climb past Enrique Collar (470) to take second place behind Adelardo. However, no matter where he ends up on that list, he has firmly etched his name into the club’s history. El capitán is a legend no matter how you slice it.
- Oblak out at least a week
Jan Oblak is set to miss at least a week with a groin injury and is said to also be suffering from an injury to his hand. That timeline could see Oblak return for the second leg against Lokomotiv Moscow next Thursday or against Villarreal in La Liga on March 18. Argentine Axel Werner made his first appearance between the posts for Atlético yesterday and filled in admirably, keeping a clean sheet and needing to make only one save.
And that’s all I have for you on this slow news week. Stay posted for prematch coverage of the Celta Vigo match later today and tomorrow.
