Although sullied by Filipe Luís’ season-ending leg injury, Atlético Madrid advanced to the Europa League quarterfinals with a convincing 5-1 win (8-1 on aggregate) over Lokomotiv Moscow. In the match, Ángel Correa, Saúl Ñíguez, Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann all scored. El Niño came up with a brace in the match, scoring a penalty and adding another neat finish five minutes later.

After the match, Simeone and Correa spoke about the dominant win.

Diego Simeone

On the match and the improvment of players:

“I admire my players. In every match, they always play the same way.

“We have a lot of players who have grown a lot like Saúl, Koke, Thomas. We believe in our future.”

On Fernando Torres:

“[Torres’] stats are the same as his colleagues. [He is] committed, involved, always wanting the good of the group.

”He played very well, he safely converted the penalty and did well for the second goal. His attitude is what has always set him apart. He will never lose that.”

On the injuries of Filipe Luís and Juanfran:

“I have not talked to the doctor. Hopefully it is as small as possible, for both Filipe and Juanfran.

“We will lose them for Sunday.”

“I have the hope of recovering them when LaLiga returns, but I am worried about that.”

(Simeone may yet get Juanfran back, but Filipe’s broken fibula ends his season.)

Ángel Correa

On the match and the upcoming game against Villarreal:

This is an important competition for us and we’re happy because we played well here and in Madrid.”

“Now, we need to start preparing for Sunday’s match against Villarreal.”
