With Sunday’s win against Celta Vigo, Atlético Madrid continued their hunt to wrap up a top-two spot in LaLiga and maybe give themselves a sliver of hope for first place. Antoine Griezmann continued his scorching form with a goal and an assist. Vitolo and Ángel Correa also added goals.
After the game, Vitolo and Diego Simeone spoke to the media about the result.
Diego Simeone
On the match:
“It was a beautiful match, against a rival that throws many players forward in attack.
“I think we always had the desire to go looking for goals, we weren’t precise enough early on. Vitolo’s goal made the match a lot more comfortable for us.”
On Vitolo’s goal and his improvment:
“He’s growing, everyone is performing at such a high level.
“We wanted him to make a leap forward in his quality during transitional play, he’s getting closer to what we want from him. Today he got the reward he deserved by scoring a goal, we hope he continues improving.”
On the title race:
“My hope is that we arrive in the last five matches still in with a chance.
There are still a lot of matches to be played, we’re going from match to match. We’ll try to continue in this way, now we have a complicated trip to Russia before Villarreal.”
Vitolo
On the match and his play:
“These are three very important points. We played a great match and you can see that in the final score.
“I’m very happy. I try to take advantage of the minutes the coach gives me. I’m very excited and I want to keep on helping the team.”
On the title race:
“As long as there are points available, we’ll go for the title. Barcelona have a significant advantage, but anything can happen.”
Vitolo’s thank you to the fans:
“I especially want to thank the fans because it’s very beautiful to get a standing ovation.”
