Atlético Madrid have released a statement on Diego Godín’s facial injury suffered against Valencia on Sunday night when Neto caught the defender with an elbow.

The statement read: “Diego Godin suffered an injury to his face during the match against Valencia. Our defender has suffered a dentoalveolar fracture to three of his maxilla.

“He underwent maxillofacial surgery on Monday, 5 February, and will now follow an individual training program, for the rest of the week. Therefore, he’ll be unavailable for Saturday’s match against Málaga.”

In layman’s terms, Godín got surgery on his two incisors in his upper jaw and the “dentoalveolar” refers to the unity of the teeth and the jaw. They came loose and he is likely to miss three weeks with Malaga, Copenhagan - home and away - and the visit of Athletic Bilbao to the Wanda Metropolitano.
