Following a hard-fought battle — complete with missing teeth — Atlético Madrid beat Valencia on Sunday night thanks to an Ángel Correa golazo. After the match, Simeone and his compatriot talked about a win which pushed them nine points clear of their opponents.

Diego Simeone

On the match:

“We played the game we wanted to at all times.

”We lacked incisiveness in the first half but took the game where we wanted. Correa’s goal took us a step forward towards an important win.”

On Diego Godín losing teeth and Atlético’s inability to receive a penalty:

“If Godin doesn’t get a penalty then someone is going to have to be killed to get one.

”Let’s see if one day we will finally get a penalty.”

On Stefan Savić’s early exit:

“Look, the medical team will report to us when they know more. [Savić has a hamstring injury.]

It was a great game against one of the best in the league.”

On Antoine Griezmann shushing the crowd:

“There was an extraordinary communication with the fans. People want to win and players know what needs to be done.

”Griezmann did everything right, he did what he had to do and people are happy at home celebrating the victory.”

Ángel Correa

On the match:

“We knew it was important to win this match. I’m happy to have scored, which helped the team get the win.

”We tried to control the match because [Valencia] just played in the Copa during the week. We knew that we were going to suffer at times, but we’re very happy with the win.”
