Atlético Madrid took on Sevilla away from home Sunday in what was expected to be a difficult match. But Atlético took control after surviving an early storm and thrashed the team that knocked them out of the Copa del Rey last month. Antoine Griezmann scored a hat trick — including Atleti’s first penalty of the season — while Koke and Diego Costa added goals of their own.

After the match, Griezmann and Diego Simeone shared their thoughts on a dominant victory.

Diego Simeone

On the match:

“I think the team was forceful and knew what to do on the pitch at every moment today. The players understood the game very well.

“We have been growing since that defeat in the Copa. The team has been ascending a very good line. Except for the first action of [Luis] Muriel, the team always searched for the game we wanted.

“The team is in good form. We played against a strong rival who have been playing very well in the Champions League, Liga and Copa del Rey, since Montella arrived. Our team was convincing and knew what had to be done in the match.”

On Sevilla’s defensive errors:

“For there to be a mistake, there has to be pressure. The team played a fantastic match.”

On Griezmann’s form:

“Antoine is in fine form. He’s an extraordinary player.”

On the match:

“I’m very happy with the team’s work, except for the two goals we conceded.

”We went on the front foot with a lot of players in attacking positions.

”I’m happy with my goals, but the most important thing is the three points.”

On the road ahead:

“We are simply trying to win all of our remaining matches. We have to continue working as we are doing and kick on like this. We dream of winning all of our games and then seeing where it takes us.”
