Chances up for grabs against Sant Andreu as Atlético train without five first team players

Atlético Madrid will kick off their Copa del Rey campaign with a very different side.

Atlético Madrid return to the Copa del Rey on Tuesday night after their successful outing against Real Sociedad on Saturday. Sant Andreu are next on the list, and in preparation Diego Simeone trained without five of his first team squad on Monday.

Koke, José Giménez, Diego Godín and Lucas Hernández trained in the gym while Antoine Griezmann enjoyed a day off. Simeone tried out Santiago Arias, Stefan Savić, teenager Francisco Montero and Filipe Luís at the back. However, the Brazilian had to leave training early and is a doubt for Tuesday.

Also, Vitolo returned to the fold with Rodri, Thomas Lemar and Thomas Partey alongside the Spaniard in midfield. Nikola Kalinić and Gelson Martins lined up in attack and it could be a chance for them to stake a claim with three games in a week coming up — an important Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund, a Madrid derby against an improving Leganés side and a visit from Athletic Bilbao — whose coach, Eduardo Berizzo, is fighting to stay in a job.

Simeone will not be on the bench at Sant Andreu’s Narcís Sala after being sent off against Sevilla last season.
