Defender Lucas Hernández says Real Madrid were interested in signing him last summer, but he couldn’t bring himself to move away from boyhood club Atlético Madrid.
“My agent told me about [the offer],” Lucas said in an interview with RMC. “When he said there was an opportunity to go to Real Madrid, I told him I couldn’t do that. Atlético are my club, a team who have given me everything.
“I’m an honest person and I couldn’t go to Madrid. I hope I can stay here for a very long time, but football moves very fast. If an offer comes in that I can’t refuse...”
Lucas signed a contract to 2024 this past summer and is now a core player for Diego Simeone. Along with Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Lemar, he forms the World Cup-winning rojiblanco triumvirate at the club.
What’s more, the 22-year-old continues to be the exact opposite of his brother — and you wonder how he couldn’t convince the younger Theo not to move to Real Madrid two summer ago. Theo now is on loan at Real Sociedad and still suspended for slapping an opposing player during a recent win over SD Huesca.
