- Griezmann Out, Aguero In?
Hello Atléticos, and welcome to another edition of the Weekly Rojiblanco. We’re going to start today with a big rumor that has picked up some steam over the past 36 hours. Reports out of England suggest that a striker swap could be in the works between Atlético Madrid and Manchester City.
The deal would see Antoine Griezmann shipped off to England, while City striker Sergio Agüero would make a dramatic return to Atlético Madrid. Agüero made 234 appearances for Atlético between 2006 and 2011 and scored 101 goals before making a controversial move to Manchester City, where he’s become that club’s all-time leading goal scorer (192).
Griezmann has long been linked to a move away from Atlético, with City’s cross-town rivals Manchester United and Barcelona frequently cited as his most likely destinations.
While City would come away with the younger of the two players in Griezmann, Atlético would add a consistent and prolific veteran to pair with Diego Costa. It remains to be seen if this rumor fizzles out, but in the mean time it’s certainly an interesting one to consider.
- Lautaro Martínez in advanced talks to join Atleti according to...Lautaro Martínez
In a recent interview for Clarín (via AS), Atlético transfer target Lautaro Martínez claimed that talks with Atleti are “very advanced” despite his recent renewal with Racing Club. The Argentine striker has been linked with Atlético since the summer but his renewal with Racing seemed to cast doubt on the transfer.
Now he is indicating that the renewal was to ensure that Racing get good value for him when he transfers. Either way, no move is expected until the summer.
- Costa injured
In case you missed it in the build up the Atlético’s mid-week cup disaster, Diego Costa has been sidelined with a hamstring injury picked up in last Saturday’s match with Girona. However, Costa is back in training and may start against Las Palmas, meaning he’d return about a week earlier than expected.
- Lucas Hernández facing possible jail time
In one of the odder stories to crop up this week, prosecutors in Spain are pursuing jail time for Lucas due to a breach of his restraining order against his now-wife.
Last February, the 21-year-old and his then-girlfriend were both issued restraining orders forbidding contact between them for a period of six months. This stemmed from a domestic incident between the two.
Recent footage from their subsequent wedding and honeymoon this past summer is being cited as evidence of a breach of the restraining order. While the circumstances of this case seem unusual, no incident of domestic violence should be taken lightly and the Court of Violence against Women is clearly doing their due diligence in following up with this one.
- What do you think?
Would you be excited at the homecoming of Sergio Agüero? Or would you rather that Griezmann just stay put? Let us know in the comments!
