Atlético Madrid needed a two-goal win at Sevilla in order to advance in the Copa del Rey. With a 3-1 defeat (5-2 on aggregate), Atlético were knocked out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage.

After the match, Diego Simeone and Koke spoke about the defeat and what happens next.

Diego Simeone

On the match:

“Our rival took advantage of their chances. I believe Sevilla finished their chances both here and in the first leg. This made them be more comfortable in the tie.

“We were close to turning the match around in the first half and scoring the equalizer in the second, but [Sergio] Rico played well.

“[Sevilla] are a cup team, and being in the semi-final, they will go for the title.”

On his role in being knocked out of the competition

“The responsibility is absolutely mine in everything that goes on within the team.

“The responsibility is all mine. There are still four months left in season and between the league and the Europa League, we’ll keep competing like we always have.”

Koke

On the match and the road ahead:

“I think they [Sevilla] were better and when that’s the case, you have to congratulate them.

“We need to study what we did wrong and improve from that. We have to fight to finish as high up in the table as possible in LaLiga and we also have the Europa League.

“We’re going to pick ourselves up because this team has always done so. Now, we need to think about LaLiga.”
