Atlético Madrid pulled out a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday with a great team effort. In the match, we saw goals from Ángel Correa and Yannick Carrasco, in addition to former Atlético hero Raúl García’s stoppage time consolation. Jan Oblak also made another incredible penalty save, this time on Athletic’s star striker Aritz Aduriz.

Diego Simeone saw a lot of positives from the match and expressed that in his press conference.

Diego Simeone

On the win: "We played an important match. To win on this field you need to play a great game and I think that we did that...after the first 20 minutes, we had clear scoring situations with Gaitán, Griezmann and Filipe Luís. Beyond the penalty saved by Oblak, with another great save, in the first half we created danger. In the second half we played a very good game. The team controlled the match and was forceful. We have won a very important match for us.”

On the 2019 Champions League final being held in the Wanda Metropolitano:

"It is another very important step for the club. Hopefully we can continue accompanying the club’s growth from the field.

“We are making an enormous effort. We have played five away matches and the response has been positive. Ultimately, it is a wish from the whole club and let’s hope we can continue accompanying it from the field."

Yannick Carrasco

On the importance of the win: “Playing here is always difficult and we are very happy to get the three points.

“In the second half we persevered with the ball and scored two goals, although at the end of the match Athletic managed to squeeze through a goal of their own.”

On his team’s current form and the battle for minutes: “We will continue to work. We’ve played several years together and we know each other very well. We’re going to compete with each other to play as many minutes as possible.”
