In case you’ve just popped out from under a rock, Atlético Madrid are a day away from inaugurating their brand new stadium and it’s what everyone is talking about.
- First practice session at the Wanda Metropolitano
Los Colchoneros held their first practice session at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and everything looks great. Check out these pics on the club’s official site from the session. The biggest takeaway for me is how perfect the pitch looks. It seems like the surface installation went well and the new grass should serve as a great stage for the match against Málaga tomorrow.
Perhaps the highlight from the session was this curling strike from manager Diego Simeone—billed by Mundo Deportivo as the opening goal for the new ground.

To his credit, Simeone put away a goal or two for the club back in the day. More importantly, it’s great to see the manager and players enjoying the new space and each other in the build up to a much anticipated night.
- Club store is ready for business
At 10:00 AM local time on Saturday the official club store will be the first section of the new stadium open for business—because money. You can check out a virtual tour of the store below.
At 11:30, sections of the stadium, including the Walk of Legends and various “fan zones,” will open to the public. Live music and festivities will keep crowds entertained until the 8:45 PM kick off.
All in all, it should be a full day of revelry that hopefully culminates in victory for Atlético.
- Wanda could see Royal inauguration
According to AS, King Felipe VI of Spain—a noted Atlético fan—has been invited to the inauguration festivities. Though his presence has not been confirmed, the king has taken part in club events in the past. If he does attend, he will highlight an impressive list of guests that includes various Spanish statesmen as well as some foreign ambassadors.
