  • Griezmann nets opening goal in demolition of the Netherlands

Atlético Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann scored the opening goal for France in Les Bleus4-0 destruction of the Netherlands yesterday. Greizmann also notched an assist along the way.

Hopefully this marks a return to form for the Frenchman. Greizmann failed to score for Atlético during the preseason and the season opener—a match in which he was served a red card for insulting the referee.

You can check out a video of his goal below.

Other internationals in action Thursday included Yannick Carrasco (played all 90 minutes for Belgium in a 9-0 win over Gibraltar), Filipe Luís (played in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Ecuador) and José Giménez and Diego Godín (took part in Uruguay’s 0-0 draw against Argentina).

According to AS, Valencia are in talks to secure the services of forward Luciano Vietto. The Argentine has been linked with a number of clubs during the transfer window. For their part, Atlético have been amenable to a sale, even agreeing terms at one point with Italian club U.C. Sampdoria before the player balked.

It is likely that proceeds from Vietto’s sale are an important piece of Atlético’s “pursuit” of Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

  • Mono Burgos hopes to coach River Plate someday

Quotes from a radio interview (via AS) shed light on the future ambitions of Diego Simeone’s right hand man, Germán “Mono” Burgos. The Atleti assistant spoke of his desire to someday return to his native Argentina and coach River Plate.

Mono made 94 appearances in goal for the Buenos Aires club during the prime of his playing career, while winning a handful of titles. He has been an assistant on Simeone’s staff since 2012.
