Good morning, Atléticos! As we roll toward the final set of preseason friendlies this weekend, Into the Calderón is pleased to present the first edition of a new daily news feature: the Daily Rojiblanco. Tune in here every weekday to receive a quick rundown of the latest news and notes concerning Atlético Madrid.
- Paris Saint-Germain eyeing Oblak transfer
Not satisfied with their blockbuster heist of Neymar from Barcelona, a report from AS suggests the Qatari French giants have set their sights on Jan Oblak, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly set to meet with the Atlético net minder’s representation.
At this point it is doubtful that Atleti would entertain talks for their star keeper, so PSG would likely need to activate the player’s €100 million release clause. Oblak’s current contract with Atleti runs until 2021, and the club is working to tie him down to a new deal.
While PSG have clearly demonstrated their willingness to take decisive action, such a move twice in the same window would raise serious questions about Financial Fair Play, if not in practice, then certainly in spirit.
Still, it should come as little surprise that Oblak would be a prized target of top clubs throughout Europe. The Slovene was recently announced as a finalist for the Goalkeeper of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League season, and he’s won back-to-back Zamora Trophies as the anchor of LaLiga’s top defensive unit.
Other finalists for that award are Juventus’s Gianluigi Buffon and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, with the winner set to be announced during the Champions League group stage draw later this month.
- Arda Turan said to want Barcelona return: Jeremy wrote all about this situation here. It’s...well, it’s certainly something.
- Talking Point: This past weekend, Major League Soccer became the first league in the world to institute the Video Assistant Referee. What is your view on video replay in the beautiful game and would you like to see the technology implemented in LaLiga? Let us know in the comments!
