Las Palmas - Atlético Madrid: Preview and how to watch

Both teams are looking to rebound after disappointing season openers.

Atlético Madrid are coming off an ugly game. Entering the match at newcomers Girona, Atlético were clear favorites, but the game unexpectedly ended with a 2-2 draw and an Antoine Griezmann red card. After a Cristhian Stuani brace in the first half, 10-man Atlético had to fight back with late second half goals from Ángel Correa and José Giménez.

This week, Atleti play Las Palmas in Estadio de Gran Canaria. Las Palmas lost 1-0 to Valencia last week and will be without Alen Halilovic, who himself received a red card in the loss at Mestalla.

Griezmann’s absence will without a doubt be a blow to Diego Simeone’s attack. With Correa set to start alongside Luciano Vietto, the club’s young Argentines will get a chance to impress and fill the Frenchman’s boots.

Las Palmas will also be without a big name, as Atlético-owned Vitolo will sit out as per a gentleman’s agreement between the two clubs.

Not only will Atlético’s forwards have to step up, but the defense will need to do better too. Diego Godín is back from suspension and Filipe Luís has been given the green light to play again after a foot injury, so Simeone will have two of his workhorses available on the Canary Islands.

Hopefully, last game was just about shaking off the rust. Atlético need a better result this weekend and should be buoyed by the return of key reinforcements. Even without Griezmann up top, Atlético should still pull out a win.

Prediction:

1-0 Atlético win.
