On Friday morning around 12:30 a.m. Madrid time, Atlético Madrid confirmed its new club badge and announced the beginning of “a historic season.”

“The new badge, which was announced last December, will strengthen the steps that have been made in recent years in the institutional and sporting arenas,” an official club statement said. “Atlético Madrid is a club proud of its roots. In honor of Madrid, the bear and the arbutus are prominent and the top of the shield is slightly rounded as a nod to the first emblem of the club.”
The badge has generated lots of controversy since it was announced six months ago, as many supporters have decried the change as too radical a departure from the club’s history. The team’s possible new shirts, leaked by Footy Headlines on Thursday, also serve as a departure from the club’s past.

This is a very ambitious design, with the new badge featured prominently in the upper right. A diagonal slash design cuts through the traditional red and white, and the Plus 500 logo gets a redesign as well. The back of the shirt is mostly solid red, but not like the 2015-16 edition, which was completely red.

The away jersey is comparatively understated: a solid, mustard yellow with a blue strip on the collar and down the sides. Overall, very well done.
Atlético will also have an official third kit for the first time, but all we know about it thus far is that it will be navy and pink.
