Atlético Madrid Femenino claimed its first title ever after defeating Real Sociedad 2-1 while Levante claimed an identical win over second place Barcelona, paving the way for the colchoneras to start their celebrations before the final whistle.
Angel Villacampa’s side went all guns blazing from the first minutes with Sonia Bermúdez threatening the most. Atlético forged ahead on seven minutes when Bermúdez whipped in a ball into the box on which Esther connected to make it 1-0.
Moments later, Bermúdez was the architect of another fantastic offensive play when she sent an inviting ball towards Amanda Sampedro and the skipper slotted the ball behind the goalkeeper to virtually seal the deal.
Nonetheless, Real Sociedad still managed to pull one back with a delightful lob which Lola Gallardo could never clear out.
Yet Atlético were never in danger of letting their lead slip from their hands, and they preserved the lead until the final whistle.
Undoubtedly, this was the perfect end to an invincible campaign for Villacampa’s girls as they went through the entire season without losing once.
Since its foundation in 2001, this was Atlético Madrid’s best season with 24 win and six draws and victories in direct encounters against Barcelona, Valencia, Levante and defending champions Athletic Bilbao.
Moreover, the 78 points reached by the side from the capital is the highest tally ever reached in the league’s history – quite a milestone.
Figures from Atlético’s men’s team took to Twitter following the game to celebrate the Colchoneras’ incredible accomplishment.
