On Tuesday, March 7, Gabi Fernández Arenas’ fourth and fifth metacarpal bones of his right hand required surgery to repair a fracture. The surgery was conducted at Clínica CEMTRO in Madrid, a FIFA Medical Center of Excellence.
The club statement on the matter disclosed that a plate and screws were required to fix the fracture in the Atleti captain’s hand. It remains unlikely that Gabi will face Granada at the weekend, and is suspended for the home leg of the Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen. Because of this extended break, Gabi will have time to recover fully from this surgery.
It’s possible a cast or protective equipment will be required while Gabi recovers fully from this surgery. This surgery should not limit Gabi moving forward, and hopefully resolved any issues he had with his hand. All credit to Dr. Marta Guillén and her staff for the successful surgery on a very important player for Atleti.
