Lucas Hernández is due in court on charges of domestic violence on Tuesday the 21st of February, the same day that Atlético Madrid play Bayer Leverkusen at BayArena in Leverkusen. The club will fly to Germany on Monday and will train in the stadium that day.
But according to Diego Simeone, Hernández could be available despite his court appearance.
"Lucas could play [on Saturday] and Tuesday if the coach decides that he should,” Simeone said at his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Sporting Gijón game.
Atlético may face somewhat of a defensive crisis if bad fitness luck continues. Diego Godín faces a race against the clock to be fit while Stefan Savić and Jose Giménez are the only other fit central defenders; the latter recently returned from injury. Saúl Ñíguez can play there when push comes to shove but given Atlético’s lack of midfield options, that might not be an angle Simeone is pursuing.
One may presume that what Simeone is talking about is whether the trainer believes that flying for two hours and playing in the same day is okay. It would be a huge boost if he was to give it the thumbs up.
