It’s Valentine’s Day, and after some flirting across the table between Atlético Madrid and Thomas Partey, los rojiblancos announced on their website today that the 23-year-old will add another three years to his current contract.

“I’m very happy,” the Ghanaian said. “I want to continue growing in Atleti.”

Thomas has returned from the African Cup of Nations and could be used heavily in the next few months as Saúl Ñíguez continues to struggle with form, and Tiago and Augusto Fernández struggle to return from injury. Thomas could be the perfect antidote to a team that has looked like it needed a box-to-box midfielder to both push Saúl for minutes and replace him when his form is out and fatigue is in.

The 23-year-old was linked with West Ham and Middlesbrough recently, but despite the unsure future of Diego Simeone, he was willing to put pen to paper and commit his future to the club.

Thomas joined Atlético as a youth player in 2011 from Odometah, his home club in Ghana.
