Atlético Madrid notched a 3-0 win over Elche on Wednesday to sail comfortably into the Copa del Rey last 16. A José Giménez header and a Fernando Torres brace were sufficient to erase the memory of a 1-1 first leg and take Atlético into the next round of the Copa.

Diego Simeone, along with Giménez and starting goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyá, talked all about the match after it ended.

Diego Simeone

On the match:

“The first half was very good. We started off strongly knowing what we had to do, replicating what we had practiced, and as a result, the opportunities started to come.

“When the goals don’t come like in the first leg, anxiety can get to the best of you. However, Giménez scored and then Torres did as well. After that we began to settle the draw.”

On Fernando Torres’ brace:

“The game he played was important. He showed great quality on the two goals he scored.”

On the late kickoff (9:30 p.m. Madrid time) and low attendance:

“I don’t appreciate it because it (the kickoff time) affects the fans. We want the people to be with us always.”

Miguel Ángel Moyà

On the match and picking up a clean sheet:

“I’ve been a professional for many years and I’d always agree to games that go like this one did. Not because of the rival, but instead because it was more relaxed and I was able to keep a clean sheet.”

José Giménez

On scoring and the importance of advancing to the next round:

“I’m happy to have scored, but more importantly to have passed to the next round of the Copa, since the competition means a lot to us.

“I’m going to keep working hard to improve and be able to help the team whenever El Cholo needs me. I’m going to try and take advantage of the opportunities I’m given and give my best to be able to help the team.”
