Atlético Madrid played their best game of the season Saturday in a 5-0 romp of Levante. Atlético hit five goals for the first time since August, with both Kévin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann scoring twice. With attacking like that, it didn’t much matter how Atleti defended, but los rojiblancos kept another clean sheet anyway and were rarely threatened.
Gameiro and Diego Simeone talked about the performance upon its conclusion.
Diego Simeone
His view on the match and recent form:
“The team’s performance was very good.
“We’ve been growing for about three or four games. We’ve been improving in intensity, in how we pressure on the pitch and the time to score goals.”
"We played well against Roma, especially the second half, and from the start today. This will help us to keep improving."
On Atlético’s great away record (19 straight unbeaten):
“We don’t think about where our matches are. We always have to play the same way, with the same intensity and desire to win. Now, the only thing we’re thinking about is our match against Elche.”
On the league table and the Valencia-Barcelona clash on Sunday:
“We have to win, regardless of whether we are close to one or the other. There are still a lot of points to play for, and the only thing that occupied me [today] was to win at a stadium I never have.”
Kévin Gameiro
On the match and the team’s improving form:
“We played a great match. We started off well with the goal early in the game. We have to keep it up.
“We’re in a good moment. We’ve worked hard to be here and we will work to continue earning points before Christmas.”
On his goals and his bond to Griezmann:
“I’m very happy to have scored. I feel good and I’m going to continue working for my teammates.
“I have a good relationship with Griezmann and it’s good for the team.”
