Jan Oblak, GK: 5
Caught flat-footed from the in-swinger and reacted late to Carlos Bacca’s equalizer on a night when most Villarreal chances fell to him pretty easily.
Juanfran, RB: 6.5
Unspectacular, but against a good opponent like this one, that’s fine. The Yellow Submarine focused on attacking the 32-year-old’s side and he held his own in defense and attack.
Stefan Savić, CB: 7
Made a crucial challenge to snuff out a Cédric Bakambu 1v1 in the first half and made a game-high nine clearances. Still, one has to question his fit next to Godín.
Diego Godín, CB: 6
Could have marked his historic 315th appearance for the club with a trademark header in the 45th minute, but Mariano Barbosa had other ideas. Godín was good enough defensively up until he was beaten by Bacca 10 minutes from time, the Colombian rising highest to head home the equalizer.
Filipe Luís, LB: 6
Not nearly as precise as you’d like considering that he pretty handily won his battle with Mario Gaspar. His final ball was lacking and he seemed to rush a handful of crosses into the box.
Ángel Correa, RM: 8.5 (Mattress Maker of the Match)
Correa was full of energy and inspiration from the opening kick and got the goal his performance deserved just after the hour. He also fired off four key passes, completed five dribbles and drew three fouls. The 22-year-old has already scored as many league goals this season as he did last (4), and he’s going to score a lot more with displays like this one.
Gabi, CM: 7
Good performance from the captain, despite being miscast in the absent Koke’s controlling role — the 34-year-old shouldn’t be taking 90 touches (seven percent of Atlético’s possession on the night). Still, he won the ball with consistency and authority.
Thomas Partey, CM: 7
Stepped up after a few so-so performances to be a sizable physical presence in midfield. His touch continues to improve, along with his passing and dribbling.
Saúl Ñíguez, LM: 6
Missed a huge chance with the net gaping at the end of the first half. Had played well in a wide role in past weeks but looked out of place against a higher-quality opponent. Often drifted toward the middle to try to make things happen.
Antoine Griezmann, FW: 7.5
Much better from Griezmann in light of recent performances. Heavily involved in link-up and individual attacking play. His movement between the lines caused problems in Villarreal’s defense and afforded him the space to take a season-high six shots and make a season-high five key passes. Oh, and his volleyed assist to Correa was pretty special.
Kévin Gameiro, FW: 4.5
Big step back for the Frenchman on Saturday, as he failed to build on his match-winner at Celta Vigo. He took just 16 touches and squandered a massive chance to put Atlético up 2-0.
Luciano Vietto, FW:
Entered for Gameiro in the 74th minute, I think.
