The draw for the Champions League group stage is complete. Here are the results:
Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D | Group E | Group F | Group G | Group H |
PSG | Benfica | Barcelona | Bayern Munich | CSKA | Real Madrid | Leicester | Juventus |
Arsenal | Napoli | Manchester City | Atletico | Leverkusen | Dortmund | Porto | Sevilla |
Basel | Kyiv | Monchengladbach | PSV | Spurs | Sporting | Brugge | Lyon |
Ludogorets | Besiktas | Celtic | Rostov | Monaco | Legia | Copenhagen | Zagreb |
The draw is a mix of good and bad for the Atleti. The bad news is obviously drawing with Bayern Munich, which makes it more likely that we’ll finish 2nd in the group and go into the knockout rounds as an unseeded team. That, in turn, makes it more likely that we would draw someone like Juventus or PSG in the second round, assuming they win their groups.
PSV is also a tricky draw, as we know from last season’s second round clash with them that we won via penalty kicks at the end of the second leg.
That being said, the pot 3 draw could have gone worse for us. Though we couldn’t have gotten Monchengladbach since we were already drawn with Bayern Munich, we could theoretically have been drawn with Tottenham, which would’ve been a nightmare scenario for all involved. This is a rougher draw than we’d prefer, but it could’ve been worse.
