The club are due to be finally hit with their 18-month transfer ban and are stockpiling younger talent to help ease themselves into that. The club already have Jan Oblak as their starter an Miguel Angel Moya as a dependable back-up.
It remains to be seen whether Werner remains with Atletico and plays in the B team or is loaned out in an effort to get important first team minutes.
Werner said recently that he was delighted to be joining a European giant, stating that “ever since hearing there was interest I have been very excited, this is an important step for my career.”
Atletico have not yet released a statement but with the player on Olympic duty, it is expected shortly after he finishes international duty in Rio.
