It was a hard-fought win for Angel Villacampa's side, who now remain third but a distant six points from FC Barcelona and seven from leaders Athletic Club, since both teams emerged as winners in their respective fixtures. It was vital for our girls to return to winning ways, having suffered a heavy blow last weekend at home to Valencia, which practically compromised hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Women's Champions League.
On the other hand, Oviedo are on the brink of relegation, as with five matches left, they can only hope for a miracle in order to salvage their place in the top tier. However, it was the home side who started brightly in the match and had a couple of chances where they could have struck first. As time went by though, the away side started to probe and created a couple of goal-scoring opportunities as well, but the first half remained at a stalemate.
After the interval, Atlético raised their game gradually and Esther, Sonia, Priscilla and Amanda were close to breaking the deadlock, but they could not target the net. However, after a breathtaking siege on Oviedo's backline, Silvia Meseguer put Atleti in front with a sensational shot from three quarters of the pitch. Stupendous. Oviedo tried to level matters but the ladies held on to take all three points from this fixture.
